Traditional Maori Greeting

I met this amazing Maori (indigenous people to NZ) man at his coffee shop in Ngaruawahia- we became instant friends as we shared about our families and travels. His elaborate  facial tatoo is called a moko and displays his life story, his position in his tribe and his family lineage. This is a traditional Moari greeting Hongi- "the hongi is the Maori welcome expressed by the rubbing or touching of noses, something akin to the Western custom of kissing someone by way of greeting. The literal meaning of "hongi" is the "sharing of breath."
