The weaving of flax flowers is a long and rich tradition established by the Maori, the indigenous people of New Zealand. This past week a friend who is part Maori taught me how to weave flax into "putiputi" meaning flower in Te Aro [Moari language]. According to tradition when someone cuts the flax they say a prayer of thanks and its important that the first flax you weave must be given away. I found this out after I gave mine to the doctor that leaves beneath me as a thank you for seeing me for free (thankyouGod!). So it was a good evening of fun with friends and learning a new skill, celebrating one of the cultures of New Zealand!
